I have back panel off and there appears to be a burnt area on the control unit. I found a place to send the unit in to have it repaired. Do you recommend this route or shout just look for a new control unit. So far what I’ve found it seems to be about double the cost for a new unit compared to rebuilt.

If the control was indeed proven faulty I would have replaced it with new.
