Cannon MRF-314W-BS. Putting styrofoam in RV freezer to save energy

Recommended Posts

We just bought a camper with a 12 volt refrigerator, Cannon MRF-314W-BS. We want to reduce battery consumption by closing off the freezer and using only the refrigerator. My understanding is that the compressor cools the freezer and a thermostat controlled damper/transfer duct from the freezer provides cooling to the refrigerator section. If we partially fill the freezer section with styrofoam (without blocking any ducts), will this reduce the amount the compressor runs and save on battery usage?  We can give up ice cream while camping if this will work.

Fill it with frozen water bottles.

Once the food is cold, it only needs to use enough electricity to make up for the heat gained though the wall insulation.

It doesn't matter if the freezer is full or empty, as long as you're not opening the freezer door.
