Amana SBD20NE Refrigerator - Water Reservoir Discontinued...Alternatives?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

We recently had the water valve replaced on our older Amana refrigerator (model SBD20NE).  At that time the copper supply line was also replaced with a stainless braided line.  We immediately noticed substantially increased water pressure from our refrigerator water dispenser post replacement.  However, we also began noticing black sediment in the water (not a ton, but there).  We flushed a ton of water through and even had an inline filter installed (no impact).  This refrigerator does NOT have an internal water filter.

I popped off the water reservoir cover and see the coiled tubing looks to be discolored with brown/black goop in the tubes.  I suspect the increased water pressure is doing a nice job of dislodging the sediment from the reservoir tubes.  Unfortunately, that particular tube kit (part ap4133361) shows to be discontinued (ex: app parts pro link ).  Is there a universal replacement since it is just a glorified roll of tubing?  I see this "Frigidaire" kit listed as a universal kit as an example: repair clinic universal kit

Will the universal kit I have listed work?  Any other options?

Thanks!

just a roll of 5/16 tubing and two sharkbite connectors from most any hardware store

Thanks All - I went ahead and ordered the "universal" kit from repair clinic and installed it today.  A few comments:

  1. Designed to replace the tank - So this kit is really designed to replace the "tank".  In this case, it assumes the tank is a frigidaire unit.  So, what that meant was that it came with the roll of 5/16 tubing and two sharkbite connectors.  You "cut off" your tubing as it emerges into the fridge and splice in the roll.  UNFORTUNATELY, the two sharkbite connectors are 5/16 to 1/4 instead of a 5/16 to 5/16 union.  So, I ended up having to buy two additional sharkbite connectors.
  2. Line from valve to "reservoir" roll and reservoir roll to dispenser line - So I spliced in the reservoir roll...and then ended up realizing I shoudl just go ahead and replace the gunky line from the valve to the reservoir.  So I bought another piece of 5/16" line from Lowes and replaced that line too.  I did not replace the line from the reservoir roll to the door dispenser line...mostly because I just had knee surgery and I was already pushing it with the more accessible lines (sitting here icing knee now as my penance)

If I were to do it again, I would do exactly as evaappliance suggested...just buy a long piece of 5/16" line and two sharkbite connectors to just replace the reservoir.  Even more likely, I would have just "unrolled" some of the reservoir line and used it to connect directly to the water valve and perhaps dispenser/door line (might have needed a single new sharkbite there).

I still see a very tiny bit of sediment (we are talking a single tiny dot in a glass of water), so I may yet replace the line going from reservoir to door and within the door...a repair for another day!
