Seems I ran into a very interesting problem that is not listed in the Service Manual troubleshooting chart.  Compressor would not shut off, unless unit was disconnected from power.  I went through the various tests available to the jazz board, and the compressor continued to run in modes which the manual claimed it would not.  Would not run with the control connector removed from the jazz board, so it appears nothing is fishy with its wiring.  Replaced jazz board, and, so far, it brought the cabinets down to temperature and cycled off - then cycled properly again, after I let the doors stand open for a time.  Seems like the only thing left is to see if it will execute a defrost cycle properly.  I'm thinking about putting pots of warm water in the boxes, so there will be plenty of moisture for it to make frost with.

In the mean time, I have a question that only experienced techs can answer.  This unit is, I think, 14 years old,  So far, the jazz board is the only repair this unit has needed.  My question is ... What's likely to be the next repair?  It's empty now and I'm thinking about whether it would be worthwhile to replace, say, the evap fan motor, and/or defrost heater while it would be easy.  What's the typical service life like for those two things?  Anything I'm overlooking?  Thanks in advance!

I did commercial refrigeration for about 15 years, commercial HVAC, water-source heat pumps by the hundreds, DDC controls..  Yet, always feel somewhat out of my water when repairing domestic refrigerators.  Somewhat different worlds.

The compressor relay on the removed jazz board is open.  So something apparently went wrong with the program execution.

About the only thing would be defrost thermostat. They like to fail in harsh conditions.

Thanks - but too late - already done.  RH in the house was about 25%.  As it turns out, it was more than a day before I checked it again, so was probably a useless exercise.  Nothing wasted but a little time.  I drank the water - Your fave, I notice.  I still haven't filled the freezer, so I will replace the defrost thermostat.  Just the sort of info I was hoping for.
