Maytag Atlantis MAV7600AWW Washer does not spin

Recommended Posts

Our Maytag Atlantis washer will enter the spin cycle, but does not physically spin. Water drains normally.

If I stop the machine, open the lid, and reach in and rotate the tub clockwise, after a short distance, I can feel it "engage" with something, and then stop.  If I close the lid and then restart the machine in the spin cycle, it SPINS NORMALLY !  Clothes come out as expected.

From another post about a similar machine that did not spin I found this description:

There is a white plastic cam that should track with the pulley in agitate, but should make the pulley climb and release the brake when spun in the spin direction... If the cam is stuck, silicone grease it to allow the climb. The pulley will 'pop' back out of the spin/brake release position when you stop physically turning it towards spin if it is lubed well enough- I mention the cam because I didn't see it referenced in your explanation, and it is essential to brake release for spin and brake engage for agitate.

I've  also seen mention of a possible problem with the thrust bearing ? [ I know there is a kit available for that. ]

Any additional descriptions/explanations/recommendations would be very much appreciated !  For example when I move the tub, what might I be engaging so that the mechanism then successfully spins. Does this have something to do with the aforementioned "cam" that may not be moving ?

Thanks in advance for your attention.
