I'm planning on repainting the old gal but first want to install a new power cord and need to clean out and replace all the old grease that's seeping out.

Meanwhile, I've only removed the rear end cap and it stopped working: no sound or movement when the speed control is moved. I can send photos if need be, but what is the first thing to look for in this case?

Thanks,

Ron

Hard to say if all you did was remove the rear cover. Unplug it and check all of the connections to see if any are loose. They should be spade connectors, (black and white) and a green ground wire with a Philips screw.

That's where I would start.

Speed control in mechanical on these like a governor in a old car. If the motor runs too fast contacts open and it slows down. I have one that has been working since 1952. Had to replace the mechanical fuse gear once.
