There is a problem with a Kenmore refrigerator made in 2006. Model 106.64952401 .
There is a loud thunk and then what sounds like a fan being activated. Except for the thunk all sounds are normal.
The noise does not seem to be from the compressor or the fan next to it. The fan being activated seems to be the one in the freezer.
Refrigerator and freezer are cold. No icemaker.

Unfortunately, you're going to have to take it apart and look for the "thunk".

The compressor can make a thunking noise when it's on it's way out, but for the evaporator fan, you'll need to actually look at it and see what's going on, since the fan has a tiny motor that I've never seen do anything but make grinding noises or squeal.

Thank you for the suggestions. The thunk is a one time noise at the start of a cycle. When I plug the refrigerator in, the compressor turns on with just its normal noise.
