Maytag Washer MHW8200FW0 - User Interface test

Recommended Posts

A recent surge burned the appliance control unit ( ACU ) in my Maytag MWH8200FW0 washer.  I need to know if the user interface (UI) also got damaged from the surge.  Can you tell me what is the input  resistance to UI 5V power supply and data line?  I do not want to risk damage to the 5V power supply of a new ACU,  knowing the magnitude of the input UI resistance connection will be helpful.

Here are my current UI resistance measurements:

J19 – Pins 1 & 3 (5V to GND)   = 7.5 ohm

J19 – Pins 2 & 3 (data to GND) = 1.825 kohm

J19 – Pins 1 &2 (5V to data) = 1.818 kohm

UI drum light pins 1 & 3 = 274 kohm

Doing some quick math one can see that connecting the ACU 5V supply will draw 684ma, I have no idea if this magnitude of current is normal. The other values seem high enough not to be a problem but again I do know the magnitude.

Unfortunately without any specification from the tech sheet it is just a educated guess. Something a little over a half amp current draw seems highs. Power surges can do lots of damage, have you ohmed out the other dc and ac loads?

Good suggestion, I need to check the motor windings and other loads.  I just went for the obvious damage first, the ACU.  If the User Interface is damaged then this machine is not worth fixing since the total parts cost adds up to the cost of a new machine.

Thanks ...

I had dead one of these. Replaced mainboard and it threw a bad console error. There was no sure way to tell until I replaced mainboard. I quote both board and UI now. And you are right, they aren’t worth repairing at that cost.

I would like to take another stab at fixing this washer. I found a used reasonably priced ACU that works. With that I was able to find another burned out circuit, the water level sensor.  That is easily changed and is not that expensive.

The user interface (UI) is definitely out, absolutely no display what so ever. The 5V power is definitely there at the UI and the ACU green LED is on. Shopping for the replacement UI I discovered that it is on back order in many places and a new one is cost prohibitive. The part number for my UI is W10911043, in my research I discovered another UI with part number W10911045. The alternate part looks the same as mine except it has a black face. The black W10911045 is readily available at an affordable price.

Does anyone know if the W10911045 is electrically compatible with the W10911043?   I can handle the different color.
