Frigidaire side by side refrigirator FRS24WSCB will not run

Hello,

Recently we had a storm come through and knocked out our power. When it come back on it ruined the compressor start relay. The internal points where the run capacitor connects were blackened and melted. I purchased a UPR041 Supco universal start relay. I used the old capacitor and attached it according to the instructions. The compressor will not start. The Ohms values on the compressor are: C (top post) to S (bottom left post) 6.4 Ohms, C to R (bottom Right post) 2.8 Ohms, S to R 8.9 Ohms.

I had a repair person come to look at the refrigerator. He stated that it is to old to fix. He also said he would not touch it because it was R12.  I was hoping to get a little more life out of the refrigerator if possible. I know it is old and will not last much longer but I wanted to try.

Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you for your time.

Model Frigidaire FRS24WSCB There could be a number after the WSCB but it appears to be rubbed out.

It's possible the old capacitor is bad. Also you got the wrong start relay. The 410 is for is for 1/4hp compressors and yours is smaller, although it should have worked.

Terry,

Thanks for the reply. I was able to check the capacitor takes a charge and will discharge with Ohms meter but I can not check UF. My meter does not have that capability. I will order a capacitor and see if that is the problem.

I could not find the HP rating on my compressor anywhere. I don't know how to figure out the rating. At least now I know that it is less then a 1/4hp. Thanks so much and have a good day.

Can someone please point me to the link to purchase a capacitor through Appliantology. I have seen a purchase parts link in the past. I would be very grateful. Thanks

I purchased a new run capacitor. The compressor will not start. It continues to buzz. I checked my wiring and have voltage to all terminals on the relay and capacitor.

Does anyone have another suggestion? I would be grateful.

Thanks

A new run capacitor won't fix a compressor not starting. It sounds like the compressor is shot.

I have taken measurements as listed above. I double checked them and looked for a short in the compressor. Is there a third way I can check the compressor to see if it is toast. Thanks for your help.

The indication that both windings are getting power and the compressor isn't running tells me the compressor has a locked rotor. It is drawing locked rotor amps(way too much) before tripping the overload.

When replacing a compressor relay/ overload, it's a good idea to check the amp draw of the compressor; a bad compressor could cause the relay to burn up. Those ohms measurements don't tell you much except which winding is which.

Make cheater cord put 120v directly to compressor. If it doesn’t start. Compressor is toast.

Thank you very much for the explanation. I was mistaken about the Ohms readings then. It is good to know. I think you were correct. The compress may have had a locked rotor. I bought one of those controversial 3 in 1 starter kit this morning. The compressor is now running. I may get a little time but it is definitely time to plan on a replacement. Thanks again.

Thanks for the suggestion. As I said above I bought a 3 in 1 kit. I thought about doing cheater but was nervous about messing up the compressor or even worse myself.
