GE Washer gtw335asn1ww is not entering spin cycle nor agitating.

This unit model number is gtw335asn1ww with a serial number of MR979429G.

My friend’s washing machine is not working properly by not agitating or entering into a spin mode. It will fill and drain. This unit uses a belt and pulley drive system.

I have tried to use the diagnostic mode to get it to agitate or spin. The shift mode does seem to work, but I am not seeing any action of the main drive motor. A couple of times the motor seemed to start in diagnostic mode, the lid locks then motor may or may not start for a moment. I can hear the mode shifter motor working making noises to engage and disengage with pulley.  Within a several seconds (less than 30) the test ends then lid unlocks.

My friend says it was washing and sometimes make an awful grinding noise. I think the mode shifter was not engaging completely into pulley. I would partially engage shifter to pulley and rotate pulley by hand quickly to make it slip. My friend says that was exactly the noise it would make.

I have the tech sheet found inside unit.

The lid lock does work normally, checks good. The capacitor checks good. The motor windings do seem to have a 8.4 ohm reading through wiring connectors check in UI panel with capacitor removed.

I did notice the belt and pulleys have some grease on them for some reason. I also noticed during the spin cycle test in diagnostic mode, the mode shifter motor was moving shifter up and down, but drive motor not spinning.

Would anyone have some ideas for trying to repair this unit?

Thank you.

These units have quite a few service bulletins published. If you don’t have access to GE technical documents I suggest your friend find a tech that does. Need to compare serial number to published bulletins to see if they pertain to this unit.
