Maytag Washer MAV4057AWW

My top loading washer started squealing when it started into the rinse spin. I removed a round plastic cap from the bottom of the agitator shaft and it stopped making noise.

Is  the cap a critical piece I need to put back on?

I also noticed the belt is fairly loose, probably could have stretched it over the pulley by hand. Should it be tight?

Tks.

Was this cap under the transmission pulley? I ran into this kind of thing with an old Wards (Norge) machine, thing was making this God-awful racket. What was going on was that a couple of the floor tiles had lifted up under the machine and the pulley was rubbing on them. Anyway, if that is the cap, I believe it serves no useful purpose, but i'd check with one of our more Maytag-inclined bretheren.
