Maytag washer hot water issue

My Maytag Centennial top load washer will not fill with hot water when called on BUT when I jiggle the water temperature knob it will result in hot water coming in. Does this indicate a problem with the water temperature control knob and is there a way to test it? Thanks.

Model number is needed for good advise. If it is an old fashion mechanical style washer short answer is yes.

Thank you for the tip. It's a Maytag model # mvwc6esww1.

I almost bought just the knob, but it's actually the selector switch, correct?Screenshot_20230209-092256_Chrome.jpg.19894043661fc2cf3124ae6135385805.jpg

From the looks of the control panel it would be item # 4, part number WPW10248240.

Vance, do you mean the far left, labeled "Temperature"?

EXCELLENT. Do you recommend that I test the selector before I buy a new one? This is SO helpful.

I have a multi meter but don't know how to test the switch. Is it relatively simple and can you describe it or should I remove it and find a friend who knows how to test it? Appreciating your help, Vance.

The switch will have to be in the washer to test. It has electronics inside for water temp sensing. Whirlpool doesn't publish the specification for the temperature sensing thermistor.  You can measure the voltages at the water valve coils. The tech sheet does have a chart for expected water temperature at various settings. If your in wash with the setting of "hot" the hot water valve should have 120 vac at pin 4 to pin 11. If wiggling the control shaft makes the voltage come and go it is probably a worn contact in the switch.

Thanks very much, Vance. I will keep you posted.

The temperatures in that chart probably are the resultant readings expected in the tub after fill is done, not the temperature of the incoming water out of the fill flume.

The control probably shifts between cold, hot, and mixed-warm during fill in response to the ATC sensor's reading, depending on which of the five choices (not including Tap Cold) is selected.  Some (bad) ATC designs run only full-hot or full-cold, alternating between them to attain an average mix around the target temp.

I have ordered a new temperature control switch and when it arrives I'll install it and hopefully the problem will be solved. Very thankful for Vance's guidance and Appliantology. I will provide a final report after I

That did it, Vance! I installed the new temperature control switch and my wife gets hot water on demand. Thank you, sir! Problem solved!
