maytag performa washer model PAV2300AWW grinding noise in the wash mode

my maytag washer makes nasty grinding noises when the agitator is agitating in wash mode.i pulled the agitator out but dont see any obvious damage.is there any dogs or pawls under the tub tat could make this noise? thanks

forgot to mention that there is noise bad noises in the spin cycle.

If I understand you correctly grinding noise in both agitate and spin - check the pump, take belt off and turn pump by itself.

These pumps have a thin corrugated strip of metal between the pump pulley and pump hub that can slip out and grind against the bottom of the pump.

Sorry for my confusing add on reply. There are no grinding noises in the spin cycle. The pump is smooth with no noise. The nasty grinding sound only occurs when the aggitator is moving durring the wash cycle. Im thing its the transmission and the machine is now scrap. Thanks
