Whirlpool WTW5000DW1 Washer Struggling To Spin

After washing blankets, the washer stopped spinning properly.  It makes some loud noises and tries - but doesn't quite work right anymore.

I was hoping the problem would be the belt since it's easy and inexpensive to fix.  However, the belt looks good.  I'm not sure if the problem is with the motor or something else making the drum difficult to spin.  Attaching a video of the Spin/Drain cycle.  The washer is completely empty during this testing.

Any ideas of where to go from here?

There's a sound of sloshing water when it's trying to spin in the video.  Are you trying to spin it with the machine leaning back against the wall or laying on flat on its back on the ground?  It can't spin that way.  There's a sealed gyroscopic balance ring partially filled with water integral to the spin basket.  The water can't distribute within the ring unless the machine is in a proper vertical position.  That presumably is the water sloshing sound, if the tub is empty of both clothes and water as you say.

Thanks for your feedback - much appreciated.

The washer was at an angle to get the best view of the mechanism.  Still, concerns about the validity are noted so I stuck the camera blind under the washer which only captured the motor.  At least this has the machine upright and also conveys the same labored nature of the spin cycle attempts.

I am currently transferring from the phone which takes a while but will update after a few hours when it's done.

Unfortunately, my system does not allow me to play videos. However, based on the nature of your concern, and my extensive experience with this model, I can make a strong suggestion. Remove the basket hub (W10528947) and inspect for damaged splines. This is the most likely culprit.

Thanks for the no-look pass.   I checked out some basket hub replacement videos and noticed others demonstrating that if you could spin the washplate (part #6 in the diagram you referenced) while holding the basket and the washplate spins independently of the basket then most likely the problem is with the splines.

I guess this is a relatively cheap part to replace if it gets damaged and maybe it's better to damage it than to transfer the load directly to the motor.  However, I sort of wonder how a metal piece would have worked out in terms of overall reliability (including the other parts).

Again, thanks for the tip - I think you nailed it.

I've since seen a suggestion to replace the original plastic basket hub part (W10528947) with a metal one (W10324651).  The metal one is designed for other units but the part "fits" and those advocating its use say it works reliably.   Any opinions about using the metal hub part?

Splines on gearcase shaft probably already damaged. Metal one should completely ruin the splines.

Sorry but only really lasting fix here is new gearcase and new hub.

As a follow-up, I went back and forth on what to do and after inspecting the splines didn't see any noticeable damage and went with the metal part.  Using the spanner wrench to really tighten the heck out of it.  For now it's fixed and we'll see how long this lasts until it's time to replace the entire unit.
