Trane XB10 Condenser Stops for 1 sec then restarts

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I have a Trane XB10 (mod 2TWB0048A1000AB) that runs but then will make a small clunk and stop for 1-2 seconds then immediately restart - and repeat.

This happens within 45 seconds, even if it has sat off for hours and cooled.

I replaced the cap last year (I only see one cap in this model).

Also, it is noisy during the run, rattling - more than usual at least.  Nothing obvious there.

Filters are clean, fins cleaned, etc.

Thank you!

Matt

The rattling is probably the fan and/or case from loosening screw or the compressor starting to fail. I would check to see if the contacts on the contactor are pitted and check connections to capacitor and make sure they're tight and not loose or burned of course with breaker off. Also recheck the capacitor because if the terminals aren't tight it can cause the capacitor to go bad prematurely. If it has a low pressure switch which would be connected to the bigger line inside the condenser because you could have a low pressure issue/leak. Just and FYI this is an appliance site and will need to find an HVAC site or forum somewhere. I would suggest Reddit you'll get better information and less not so nice people. Most likely they'll tell you to call a technician though. Without proper test equipment it'll be hard to tell what it could be especially since you need an EPA certification to test the refrigerant pressures. Always change your filters when recommended. Watch ww HVAC,John Israel HVAC,and/or HVAC Guy YouTube channels for more information. Just understand most won't want to help a non tech due to liability and some aren't too nice to diyers like this site. You probably already got your answer by now due to how late I am to seeing this but if not and if it's okay I can probably help out if you tell me your findings if I can decifer your what you report back. Good luck!

Good advice. Sounds to me like it is stopping on high pressure. A lot of Trane condensers have a high pressure switch . Also if the expansions valve on the Evap coil is bad or clogged it can cause this Also. Either one would make the clunking and sudden shut down the compressor. If the condenser fan is still running after the compressor shuts down it’s either a restriction or bad compressor. Trane compressors have a 10 year warranty . If it is out of warranty I personally would go back with something other than a Trane . I always thought the were over rated . (my opinion after 30 years working onHVAC systems)
