Returning guest presenter Aaron Wilson is back for another exciting discussion. This time, we'll be talking about...
The Science of CYA: How to Keep the Customer Safe, Document Your Work, and Not Get Sued
We take on a lot of liability as appliance repair techs, and that can get us into sticky situations whether we've done anything wrong or not. Aaron will be teaching us all about how to navigate this side of the trade.
We'll start by going over a tragic, real-world case study where a sloppy installation had lethal results, analyzing exactly how the installer's negligence caused this. From there, our scope will expand to what kind of safety precautions we should implement in our own work, both for the customer's sake and for our own.
But even if you do everything perfectly, there's still the famous "technician witch hunt." Well, we'll also talk about how to deal with that by thoroughly documenting your work and putting yourself beyond legal reproach.
A little about our guest, Aaron Wilson:
Aaron has been in the appliance repair trade for about 15 years, starting out by doing installations before moving on to bigger and better things. He worked for C&W Services as a Sub-Zero authorized servicer for a time and thereafter joined Mr. Appliance of Highland Park in the Dallas area, where he worked for years as the lead technician and field service manager. These days, he's making sure that all the appliances of everyone's favorite fried chicken place are in tip-top shape as the Quality and Performance Consultant for the southwest branch of Chick-fil-A. In addition, he has taught many classes on refrigeration repair and advanced diagnostics, during which time he also developed training material for the soft skills side of things, which he is delighted to share with you. On top of all that he's a certified graduate of the Master Samurai Tech Academy, so he knows his stuff!

Viking VUAR140D Beverage Refrigerator Freezing

Model: Viking UAR140D Beverage Refrigerator

My refrigerator has just started freezing all my drinks. So, normally in the past with my beverage refrigerators it has always been the thermostat module (PW240028 (Viking) Refrigerator Thermostat Control Kit). I replaced it and seems to still be the same problem, even at the lowest setting "1", it is showing 32-34 degrees, and has gone down to 20 degrees. I checked the fan, runs fine, there is no dust buildup on the coils. What else should I be trying to find causing this low temperature.

Best Regards, JR

Could be start of a sealed system issue. If I recall an all refrigerator is an overcharged freezer and if it low it'll start freezing. But I would think the control would turn it off before that. Is the start overload working correctly? Try checking the new control, maybe you got a dud? Not likely unless it came from eBay lol.

Hello,

Thank you I will check.

Given your Viking refrigerator is freezing despite replacing the thermostat module, there could be other components at fault. One potential culprit could be the defrost timer, which could be causing the fridge to cool continuously if it's malfunctioning. Another possible issue could be the temperature control board which, albeit less common, could cause overcooling if it's not functioning properly. The damper control assembly might also be at fault; if it's stuck open, it could be allowing too much cold air into the refrigerator section. Lastly, check the thermistor which monitors the fridge's temperature. If it's giving incorrect readings to the control board, this could result in overcooling. If all these components check out and the issue persists, it may be best to consult with a professional technician.

Hello Jeanne,

Thank you for the reply. I believe on this unit, the thermostat (PW240028) is all in one including the defrost timer and temperature control board, as I do not see any separate defrost timer or control board.

The evaporator panel seems to frost evenly, and I do not see any frost build up meaning a leak.

The only item I can see is the thermistor. Is there a way to test the thermistor to verify it is in working order.

Thank you JR
