Why do antiphase sine waves cancel each other out in a sound mixer but not in a center-tapped transformer?

This is an excerpt of the full split-phase household power supply webinar held on June 6, 2016. In this excerpt, I explain why antiphase sine waves (meaning 180 degrees out of phase with each other) cancel each other out in a sound mixer but not in a center tapped transformer. Just because an AC voltage can be represented or modeled as a sine wave does not mean all sine waves behave the same way everywhere regardless of the device-- you have to know what you're measuring!   R

The Samurai's Triumphant Return from the 21st Annual Appliance Service Training Institute (ASTI)

The eagle has landed back up here in yankee-land. Awesome conference but great to be back in that crisp New Hampshire air. From Sun Country back to Snow Country... my brain is so full of the latest and greatest appliance info, I've got to relieve the pressure by sharing it with all of you as soon as possible! Stay tuned for pearls to be cast your way soon. Mrs. Samurai is working feverishly at translating my neanderthal scribblings called "notes" into a digital format that would be recognized as

Troubleshooting Gas Ovens like a Master Samurai Tech

In the last webinar, we put on our Master Samurai Tech hats and did a cleanup service call on a gas oven after a parts changing monkey (PCM) had already been out and failed to diagnose and repair the problem. We looked at what the PCM did on the service call as well as he did not do but should have done. We did a quick review of how hot surface ignition (HSI) systems work and how variations in supply voltage can affect the operation of these systems. Then we got inside the head of a Master Samur

The Chatroom Diaries, June 9, 2016: Carbon Monoxide and Samsung Washer Door Lock Problem

Had some great conversations in the Appliantology Chatroom today!  First, had a very interesting conversation with Brother smee about carbon monoxide, measurements, standards, production and health effects. We pulled up this excellent training presentation from GE, that demystified a lot of the confusion about CO, and looked at it together:  Might make a good topic for a future Office Hours.  Next, had a good conversation with Mr.Pro-- to be continued-- as we tracked down a

Although You May Not Realize It, You Are Technological

Today, science tells us that the essence of nature is freedom. The planet is radiating sonar energy. Serenity is the driver of inseparability. We are at a crossroads of spacetime and dogma. The cosmos is calling to you via frequencies. Can you hear it? How should you navigate this unlimited universe? If you have never experienced this source undefined, it can be difficult to exist. The world is approaching a tipping point. It is a sign of things to come. This journey never en

Fixing a Loud Noise in a Bosch Dryer

Finding the source of this noise in this Bosch dryer was tricky. Judging by the sound, the noise had to originate from either the motor or the blower wheel. The problem turned out to be the blower wheel. The noise was only heard in a heated dryer cycle. Apparently the heated air would deform the plastic blower wheel just enough to make it contact the blower housing while rotating. Here are the part links to the drum rollers and blower wheel that I used to fix this dryer: Drum rollers ==&g

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm thankful that the Great Forum Migration went as well as it did. Wasn't easy but it was definitely worth the hassle. I'll be out all morning, back for a little bit this afternoon and then off to some friends house for Thanksgiving dinner. Back here and online after that. Hope everyone has a great day with family and friends!

Back to Work!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving day with family and friends. Lots of people have the day off today but, alas, no such luxury for the Samurai. After a good morning constitutional, it's back to work! The other night in chat, BrntToast suggested that I start a forum just for tips and tricks on using and getting them most out this forum software since it's new for all the oldtimers here, including yours so freaking truly. Just did that this morning. You may have noticed the new forum cat
