Range with Over-the-range microwave (for dummies)

We've always liked microwave/convection oven combinations but our countertop unit is neither any more. We'd really like to get a new smooth surface range and over-the-range microwave combo. However ... in an effort to actually "think this plan through":

1) If we want to use Convection, should we look for another microwave/convection unit or is there any reason to relocate the feature to the range oven? The additional cost for convection seems to add about the same cost to either unit...

2) We want white units and it's almost gotta be electric or we'd have to go with propane. Brand match would be nice, but not if the manufacturer makes a great unit for one and not-so-great "other" unit. Any "been there, found this" recommendations?

3) Over-the-range microwave logistics? We figure we'll have to replace a couple of cabinets or never use the back burners on the range. Shelf or brackets? Do we install the microwave on a shelf over a vent hood— or do we go with a unit that includes venting fans? Or, since the current vent hood doesn't actually vent outside, do we just forget the vent hood entirely? We have a whole house attic fan that is off to the side of our range and we just turn it on whenever things get really smoky or steamy — even in the winter, if only briefly...

4) Over-the-range microwave support: Brackets — Available in a "universal" version or are these specific to the model of microwave?

OR... Stop using one dead appliance to justify getting two new ones? Just replace the one that worked way longer than we ever expected it would?

Is there actually a reason to have a vent vent hood that doesn't actually "vent" outside? It seems like they really only blow the air out into the room and catch dirt & grease on the underside and glue dust on the outside surface. The filters never really do much of anything, either. All that for an overhead light????

:thanks:

We have a NG convection Range / Oven and then we bought a OTR convection M/W (it was on sale at Sears Outlet Store)

We don't use the M/W "convection" much

takes longer to heat, and sometimes we "forget" that you can't just reach into a M/W to remove the food. :burnin:

The only "vent" we have is built into the M/W with no outside venting.

Works OK, unless the Range has a "grill" and you grill steaks, etc ..

good website for options / dimensions.
