I have a Maytag Atlantis MAV7600AWW. The other day it was running and it started making loud noises (cant remember what it sounded like) then it stopped all together and smelled like burning rubber. I assumed it was the belt so i replaced that. Turned it on again and the motor just hummed and started smoking. I did some research and from mostly what i read made me believe it was the motor. I got a motor and replaced it, and it still is having the same issue. The water fills fine, then when it gets to spin, the timer buzzes and the motor hums and smokes. It seems like something is restricting the motor. I was able to turn the drum from the pulley side and the inside of the drum, the drain pump is a little hard to turn by hand but it does turn. I am lost now on what could be wrong. The two things i can think of would be a capacitor(not sure if it has one) or the pump is seized. Again the drum and motor spin by hand with ease. Anyone know what else i could do, i dont want to spend anymore money on it unnecessarily.

Cheers

Does the drain pump spin easily?

Its a little tough to turn by hand

I did try to turn it on when the belt was off and the motor still hummed  and smoked but that was before i replaced the motor.

Did the new motor smoke also without the belt on?

We need to look at the wiring schematic along with the timing chart. Look closely at the start windings on the motor and the contacts that are to be open/closed.  Timing is key.  The timer switches Line and Neutral going to the start windings, depending on direction of rotation. (agitate vs spin).

I didnt try it without the belt yet. Im not sure about wiring.

This needs to be isolated between an electrical vs mechanical issue.

Either the pump is locked, the transmission is locked or the start/run winding is not being energized.

Thanks for the response.

How can i check each of those scenarios?

Remove the belts from the pump and transmission. Start the motor in spin and see if it turns. Then try agitate. You can blow into the pressure switch tube to engage the motor in in the other direction (agitate part of the cycle).  If the motors spins in both cases, it should rule out an electrical condition.  Try various cycles just to make sure the timer is not getting hung up at any one point.

Mechanical can be checked by turning the transmission pulley clockwise and then counter clockwise.  In spin the transmission will have more drag because your are dis-engaging a break and turning an entire tub, but in any case you should be able to turn the pulley with both hands. Check the pump as well. You mention its a bit tough to turn, so I am guessing that could be it.
