I have an lg French door fridge model LRFD25850ST. It started acting strange beeping 3 times and then the display lighting completely up, It seems to be putting itself in test mode as this is what happens when I push the sw button on the main pcb. I tried all 3 test modes with no errors but I am not sure where to look to tell if the damper is opening and closing when switching between test 1 and test 2. The display does show 22 in test 2 and 33 in test 3. What would be causing this behavior? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

With no error codes, I would suspect the main board- even if the display was somehow actuating its own buttons, as you know, test mode can only be accessed by the single button on the main control board.  Part number: AP4443845  As a first test though, I would disconnect and re-connect all the board cables, and watch it for a day for the symptom to reappear, to be sure it isn't a connection issue... many computer problems are connection related.

I will give that a shot in the morning, on a side note the temp in the fridge is higher than the display temp and when I try lowering the temp on the display it resets to 37 after opening the door.

How are you measuring fridge temp- the best way is to use a meat type thermometer and put it into a jelly or mustard jar to read what the FOOD temp is. Air temp in the fridge is not an accurate determining factor for diagnosis...

I checked the food temp as you described, with the display at 37 the air temp is 40-41 degrees and the food temp showed 50. When I try to lower the temp on the display the temp does not change inside the fridge and when you open the door it resets to 37. I had the door open when it went into test mode 1 then went from test mode 1 to test 2 and the test 3 on its own. I was able to unplug all the connectors on the pcb a few minutes ago so I will watch it tonight and see what happens.

It looks like unplugging all the connections did not resolve it. So based on everything it would be the pcb?

Although the mainboard may be the cause of the problem,  your premise, determining it is the board based on it automatically entering test mode is incorrect.   Test mode can also be activated at the interface by pressing  the EXPRESS FREEZING button and LOCK button for 3 seconds for Test 1. Repeat to enter Test 2... etc

With regards to taking fresh food temperatures.... using  a meat thermometer as described is only useful if the jar of jelly/mustard was already in the fridge for 4 hours or longer.  This is okay for intial testing but impractical  to determine temperature changes in the fridge on the fly.  Taking temps  of compartment air can be accurate if done  using a thermocouple or laser thermometer (immediately after door is open after being closed for a while).     The mass inside a jar of jelly will be extremely slow to change and impractical to determine any immediate changes to temp settings.

So should I replace the display or the main board?

Posted

Your decision is actually quite simple.  Replace the mainboard.  But obtain it from Appliancepartspros as linked above. This way you can return it and get your money back if it doesn't work.

This suggestion is not based on any special knowledge of LG refrigerators  but  based on the fact the interface board for your fridge is no longer available.   Thus your decision is clear.

I tried to put the unit in test mode using the express freeze and lock buttons, the display will change just as when I push the sw1 button on the main board but it will either change back to normal when I let go of the buttons or it will stay normal and give a continus beep. It will never actually enter test mode using those buttons. Does that point it to that board or the main one?

I was able to find the display board so based on my previous post what would you recommend?

it's still a crap shoot.... if your source for the display board doesn't have an unconditional return policy,  then get the mainboard.  If it does,  odds are it's the mainboard but some things are unknowable based on the information the manufacturer provides.  From a tech's standpoint,  this is a common conundrum.
