I have been trying to diagnose a problem with my Whirlpool dishwasher that won't drain at all.

I have checked for any blockages and found none. I overrode the door switch and can see that the drain impeller is working (at least it is bubbling up where the water is in the bottom and I can hear it working).

I have removed the little rubber check valve and found that the rubber disk has disintegrated. I wouldn't think that would cause it to not drain properly.

I'm not sure I understand the function of the check valve. Would the removal of it prohibit the water from draining? I wouldn't think so...

HELP!!! :-)

IT would not prohibit draining unless it ripped-off and was lodged further down the hose... the best way to know if the impeller is good is to physically touch it and spin it with a finger... If it is stripped on the pump motor shaft it will move enough to make bubbles and sound, but not enough to impel the water toward the drain. I have found many drain hoses packed with grease, keep an eye out for that, white grease that is hard to see without removing the hose...

Thanks. I have disconnected the hose from the bottom of the impeller and blown through it. I am able to blow the water through and out of the hose. The impeller seems to be spinning fine.

Is the drain pump solely responsible for pulling the water out of the bottom of the dishwasher - or could it be the pump and motor assembly?

The drain pump is responsible for emptying the wash pan...Are the blades intact on the drain pump impeller? sometimes an object gets rattling around in the sump and wears the blades down to a nub- they should be 1/3 to 1/2 inch long, 9 of them babies emanating from the shaft. If the hose is clear, perhaps something in front of the pump in the drain path is clogged. Does this unit drain into a garbage disposal?

The impeller that I have looks fine. It only has 4 blades and they don't look worn at all.

No, the unit does not drain into a garbage disposal.

I'll pull the drain pump again and see if there is anything between the inlet at the base of the dishwasher and the pump.

I pulled the drain pump and checked for blockages...Nothing.

The drain hose attaches to the bottom of the pump with a 90 degree black rubber elbow. That elbow has what feels like a diaphragm in it with a very small hole in the middle. Is that correct? Seems like that could easily get clogged.

The 90 degree elbow has writing on it that says it is a check valve. I thought a check valve was a flap that moved back and forth with pressure. I cannot get this to move to an open position. Is that my problem?

If it won't let water gush through at the rate of a garden hose at full blast, you may have found the problemo amigo!

Repairclinic shows your check valve as looking like this: Part number: WP8268375     I see no hole in the middle, nor does it look like the check valve you describe, but it should certainly let water flow easily in one direction, at least

Part number: WP8268375

Yeah, apparently there are two check valves on this dishwasher. There is the one that you pictured and there is one in the elbow of the drain hose. I'll order a new drain hose and see if that takes care of the problem.

Thanks!

Remove the check valve you think is bad with a Rambo knife and test it before you spend the money! Test that theory!

I cut into the drain hose since I was going to order a new one. What had happened was that the round check valve flap had torn off and traveled into the elbow lodging there. No way was any water going to flow through there!

Thanks for your help!!!
