So now I have a new problem.

Because two small pieces of styrofoam broke loose on the back of the duct housing, I now see small icicles forming on the bottom of the housing. I still have the two small styrofoam pieces.  I am thinking of using some kind of glue to reattach them, or use some kind of foam or sealant.          Any suggestions?

Not sure what to do about broken foam. Gorilla glue? I'm interested to hear others' suggestions.

I have a question Phil...

was the defrost system actually turning on or just all cooling shut down?

i can't understand how bad cold control would initiate defrost cycle.

Thanks

Use cold weather aluminum tape on styrofoam, it doesn't smell and change the flavor of the food!

If I recall, you can put a normal defrost timer on this model in place of the ADC for troubleshooting purposes, the terminal layout ( 3 in a group, one off to the side)  is the same except they added the light circuit through the ADC board in order to make it more indespensible.

I should have looked at the parts manual to see how the air diffuser was intalled.

Instead, I assumed that the sensor tube went behind the air diffuser assembly & basically pulled it off from the refrigerator instead of the freezer.  Therefore the styrofoam is separated from the freezer side.  There is small icicles forming on the bottom of the assembly, which means the assembly is not sealing.

I don't think glue would work & I will probably buy a new part due to my stupidity.

Lesson learned.

Thanks for your input.

If you take the icemaker out, you can remove the plastic air duct that directs the air toward the diffuser... there will be four plastic tabs extending in from the fridge side poking out at all four corners of the opening in the freezer side. Grab the tabs and squeeze them toward the middle until all four let go - and you can push the remaining piece into the fridge compartment. once you have both of the pieces, in hand,  tape them back together with Aluminum tape. Notice there is a notch below the diffuser where the sensor part of the cold control goes into the freezer...

A roll of aluminum tape is less than a new part, and you will have to dismantle the assembly anyway (to install the new diffuser), so try my way first!

When I pried the air diffuser off from the refrigerator side, the plastic diffuser remained on the freezer side. So my question is if there was some kind of control rod attached to the diffuser that broke off, & can be reattached?

You shouldn't have to pry anything, the diffuser releases easily by squeezing the tabs from the freezer side as described in the earlier post...

There are mechanical and servo-motor controlled versions: the mechanical ones have an obvious metal rod going from the control area and attaching to the diffuser door. If there is only wires clipping into a motor, it is the "servo" version...

I disassembled the cold control & found burned contacts.

How do I insert a photo?

This is a very interesting thread.

Bingo Bango.........so this forum actually works.......that's why we're here.......because it does work.

We're here to help.....I'm happy you fixed the problem.

Now have a cold brewski........cheers bro.......

Didn't know there was two pages on this.......OMFG!!!!!! LOL    Anyway, I was happy you replaced the cold control and it worked........but you said you broke some of the styrofoam.....which happens if you take it apart incorrectly........I've had to fix this numerous times.

Anyway.....yeah, use aluminum tape to hold the entire assembly together(with the broken piece(s).....put it back in place, and then use liquid styrofoam(the good stuff??) to seal any air leaks between the freezer and fridge section, and then re-assemble. Then you should be good to go.......

While typing an answer to your problem(and I was typing fast....LOL), Hiroshi had some fixes to your problem also, sometimes we don't have time to read all the responses, sometimes(and I'm only speaking for myself) we're more concerned on just helping someone solve their problem......and I'm guilty of that sometimes. Obviously Hiroshi and most other techs are aware of the baffle problem........anyway....glad you're problem is fixed........or close to it......at least the major issue is fixed.

Since the air diffuser was beyond repair due to pieces that stuck in the freezer compartment I purchased a new one, which I installed yesterday.                              What a SOB.                                    The problem was that no matter how hard I pushed on this from the refrigerator side, it would not engage the four tabs.                     I finally had to squeeze the foam with my fingers to decrease the width of the foam & finally got the unit to lock.                                       This is a good tip for anyone else installing this part,
