Dryer sometimes starts then also stops

I have a Whirlpool dryer and is doing a funny thing. What is doing is it works for a while and then just stops if I give it about two months rest it will start working again. But then after a couple of uses, in the middle of use, it would just stop working. Of course, I can’t be sure of two months is the exact time. Right now if I try to start the dryer with the button on top, what it does is make a loud clink like it’s trying to start, but nothing happens. Could someone suggest something or troubleshooting steps or some things to look at? Thanks

I would be scrutinizing the door switch... the motor wouldn't just make a loud clunk- if it was being energized, but not moving there would a "humming" noise as well.
