Whirlpool Washer 7MTAWS800 tub spins while draining

On my old whirlpool diect drive coupler washer, I have a problem I can't figure out. After the pause from agitating and it starts to drain, it immediately starts spinning while draining. If I hold the tub at the start, it drains normally but when i let it go, it starts spinning. If i hold the tub more than 2 minutes or so, I think I smell a burning odor. I've swapped out the complete transmission and the timer with known good ones from my other machine and the same thing happens. The only thing left that I can think of is the brake but I'm not sure how that is supposed to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The neutral drain in both transmissions are bad,  the older direct drives didn’t have a neutral drain but whirlpool discovered they could cheapen the clutch by pumping all the water out before starting the spin.  It will work fine ( better in my opinion) doing the swirl away drain but the cheaper 3 pad clutch will wear out a little quicker.

Thank you for your reply. With this washer, I only do about 3 loads per week. If I understand you correctly, I should just leave it like it is? BTW. it does have the 5 pad clutch.

if it were me I would , cause if it has the 5 pad clutch you will be fine. to me, it does a better job with a swirl away drain.
