Kenmore 110.97583820 gas dryer

I have a Kenmore gas dryer (model 110.97583820) that has been in-service for nearly 22 years. Overall, we have been pretty happy with the longevity, the reliability, and the performance. I replaced the motor 4.5 years ago along with the the belt, rollers, and assorted small parts.

Last week, though, I put in a load of laundry, set the timer to AutoDry, and started it up. I was really surprised when I can back and hour later to find that the timer had not yet advanced to the WrinkleGuard position. The laundry was bone dry yet the dryer was not only tumbling but still heating.

It has done the same thing on subsequent loads so, for now, we are not running the dryer unless we are standing nearby.

When I manually turn the timer to WrinkleGuard or Air, the dryer will run without heating. When I set 10 minutes on the Timed Dry, the empty dryer ran for 20 - 25 minutes BEFORE it stopped heating.

As it is time for the annual pull-it-out-and-check-for-lint cleaning, I will do that this weekend. I normally also pull the knobs and cover from the control panel and vacuum out and/or gently blow out and accumulated lint there, too.

What do you suggest as the likely cause(s) of this problem?

Thanks for your insight and sage advice!

From the info you have provided I would give two or three initial, and hopefully most probable guesses as to diagnosing your problem. I would say you could have two problems, but that's not real common. You sound like a handy person, especially if you replaced the motor and more. My first two guesses, in order of probability(hopefully I'm right).....would be....the coils are going bad, my second guess....eh, it could be the timer.......and the third guess could be a venting problem.....

Bingo! Your second guess was correct. After confirming that the venting was not the problem, I pulled the timer and the timer motor was dying. I located a proper replacement on the cheap (bulk trash collection day in the neighborhood) and all is well with the dryer.

Thanks!

Where do you live where there are "common" 22yr old dryer timers lying around on the street at trash day? :)

He maybe just needing to replaced the motor on the timer, (timer motor), that is somewhat universal across many different dryer timers, (different models and brands may take the same timer motor that can't be purchased new without replacing the complete timer - with the exception of some old Maytag washer timer motors).

So you replaced the timer advance motor... well done. Yeah the mallory timer motors are ubiquitous, there are one drive gear or two drive gear types.

Maytags either had the gear drive or a rotating pin drive, if I recall.
