Maytag Neptune Dryer with a Split Drum

Customer called with a complaint that her 7-year old Maytag Neptune MDE9700AYW dryer would hum when started then click off. Also said the drum would not turn by hand. What could the problem be? The answer may surprise you! Epilogue: Turns out this is not covered under warranty. The failure occurred right at the seam where the drum was welded together. Total fee to replace this drum, part and labor, is over $400. I recommended that the customer purchase a new Whirlpool dryer with a lint f

Some tips on diagnosing the door latch assembly on a Frigidaire Gallery frontload washer that won't do high speed spin

For any frontload washer that won't go into high speed spin (but does tumble), the top three things to check are: 1. Drum pump out. No pumpy, no spinny. If the drum is not pumping all the water out before spin begins, the imbalance and/or hall effect sensors sensors in the machine will prevent it from going into high speed spin. Incomplete or no pump-out conditions are caused by a problem with the drainage system: drain pump bad or gunked up with gookus, drain hose clogged, suction boot clo

Samsung Dryer Troubleshooting and Electric Circuits Review

Many techs have trouble interpreting a schematic diagram and understanding how to use it for troubleshooting. In this webinar, held on March 29, 2019, we used a Samsung electric dryer and a GE double oven as case studies to review electric circuit principles and troubleshooting. Some of the topics we talked about: Neutral sensing in Samsung dryers: what that means, what it does, and how it affects troubleshooting Series and parallel circuits and how to identify them on a real-worl

More Downtime Today

Yet more downtime today on the server that runs this site. That makes the 8th time this week alone for over an hour and half of downtime. My host tells me that the server running my site has been the victim of several denial of service attacks. Must be another site on this server that draws all the hostiles like flies to a turd. Well, that turd is stinking me out! My host has offered to move me to another server which I eagerly accepted. The move will happen sometime in the next 24 hours,

I Blinked and Missed the Server Migration!

That had to be the most seamless server migration I ever didn't participate in! Been having stability problems with the server that hosted this forum (RE: my last post) and complained to my host who are the same people that wrote this forum software: Invision Power Board. Yeah, I figured have the forum hosted by folks who would know the optimum server configuration to run their software. While that may in fact be true, the reality in my case was a bit different. Another site on the server k

Fixing a Frigidaire top-load washer that won't pump out

This customer contacted me at 2AM Saturday morning of Memorial Day Weekend via the Service Call Request form at the homepage of my website, www.ApplianceGuru.com, and I was there in just a few hours. That's SOP for The Appliance Guru! The customer was at his condo by the golf course for the weekend and the washer in his Frigidaire stacked laundry unit wouldn't pump out. That can really put a wet towel on a vacation! I disassembled the pump and found a golf tee jamming the impeller. In the video,

How the Energy Star Requirements are (unwittingly) Protecting the Appliance Repair Trade

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a fan of Big Gubmint-- it is far too impersonal, too easily bought and controlled by large corporate interests, and always anathema to individual liberty, security, and creativity. But, once in a while, Big Gubmint's meddlesome and doltish regulations have the unwitting effect of benefiting a narrow group of little people, like us. The Energy Star requirements are a case-in-point. Thanks to the Energy Star requirements, manufacturers are making appliances

Diagnosing a Couple of Problems with the Door on a Frigidaire Dishwasher

The door on this dishwasher has a couple things going on with it: it falls down heavily when it's opened and the front panel is separating from the rest of the door. The customer called me in to assess the problems and give an estimate for the repairs so they could decide whether to repair or replace the dishwasher. Watch with shock and awe as The Appliance Guru immediately hones in on the problems with the accuracy and precision that only his calibrated eyeballs can bring to the job! [media=]

Fixing a Loud Noise in a Bosch Dryer

Finding the source of this noise in this Bosch dryer was tricky. Judging by the sound, the noise had to originate from either the motor or the blower wheel. The problem turned out to be the blower wheel. The noise was only heard in a heated dryer cycle. Apparently the heated air would deform the plastic blower wheel just enough to make it contact the blower housing while rotating. Here are the part links to the drum rollers and blower wheel that I used to fix this dryer: Drum rollers ==&g

How to Remove the Main Control Board in a Bosch Ascenta Dishwasher

The Bosch Ascenta line of dishwashers disassemble very differently from the older Bosch dishwashers you may be familiar with. In the older Bosch's, the main control board is easily accessible in the door control panel, just like you would expect. But not with the Ascenta line. The Bosch engineers thought it would be a great idea to put the main control board way down at the bottom in back of the dishwasher so you have to pull the whole dishwasher out to get to it. Brother Chat calls the danc

Maytag Electric Dryer Motor Stops Running After Start Switch is Released

In this recent Live Dojo appliance troubleshooting workshop, we workshopped a problem with a Maytag dryer where it would start but stop running as soon as the start button was released. We looked at how the motor's start circuit works-- how it's configured before starting and how it changes after the motor is started and running. Finally, we compared this start configuration with the Whirlpool push to start (PTS) relay system.  Become a tech member at Appliantology and join in on

How to replace the motor brushes in a Bosch WFR2450 Axxis+ washer

If your Bosch washer won't spin or tumble, or the motor makes weird growling noises, you may need to replace the carbon brushes in the motor. Here's the part link to the replacement brush set ==> http://www.repaircli.../154740/1043249 And here's a pretty good video that shows you how to replace them: Although the video does a good job of showing you how to replace the brushes, Grand Master kdog offers the following clarifying comments on some of the other points mentioned in the video: So
