The Master Samurai Tech Ten-Step Tango for Troubleshooting Appliances


Troubleshooting is the big missing skill among appliance techs today. This is the skill that distinguishes parts changing monkeys (PCMs) from Master Samurai Techs. It's the difference between a drunken street brawler making monkey jabs versus a trained MMA fighter making kill shots.

PCMs will thrash about wildly, monkey-jabbing at components hoping to get lucky and usually end up getting their asses kicked.

Anyone can monkey jab and the sad truth is that this is the dominant practice of the appliance repair trade today. It doesn't have to be that way. Anyone who wants to can learn how to make kill strikes like a Master Samurai Tech.

In our Office Hours webinars, we've begun a series of workshops on the Ten-Step Tango, applying it to different troubleshooting scenarios on real-world appliances. We started off by introducing the Ten-Step Tango procedure and then applied it to simple appliances (no control boards, just mechanical controls, like timers). Then, in the next workshop, we kicked it up a notch and troubleshot appliances with multiple control boards, digital communications, hoodoo, voodoo, and all kinda weird stuff.

Nice explanation, Samurai! Your old, boring, teachers at school tried to teach us all this: The Scientific Method.

Empiricism is the best way to work through unfamiliar territory, whether it be mathematics, mechanics, or chemistry...

affect one variable at a time, closing off the "blind-alleys" until all you are left with is the answer.

Domo, Hiroshi. Yep, gotta have a system. Troubleshooting isn't pattern recognition or factoids, though it's often mistaken for these. Experienced techs can and definitely should draw on pattern recognition and factoids to get stuff fixed-- this is how they capitalize on their experience and get faster at common repairs. But these things are not much help when working on something new or "off the flowchart." Hopefully the Ten-Step Tango will provide some guidance and inspiration in those dark times.

Your 10-Step Tango for Trouble Shooting Appliances blog brought back memories of my years as a Technical Representative for a large sensors based industrial process control company.  Every industry has their PCM.  In my work history, I would be called into a plant at all hours of the day, often facing emotional customers and a PCM who has barricaded themselves behind a mountain of circuit boards, manuals and tools.  The only way out of the troubling-shooting disaster was to use a variation of the 10 step process - period. 

Final comment: After the Problem Statement I have found step two, which references documentation, is often bypassed with dire consequences for a successful outcome.

Thanks for your comments, jm! And you make a good point: the technical troubleshooting process is virtually the same no matter what equipment you're working on.
