  3. Hello all, I have been wrestling a GE Monogram ZISW420DRA side by side fridge for about 8 months now with the same problem... everything works fine (after a manual defrost & part replacement) until the freezer gets too cold (-10) and the fridge gets too warm (47)... this has happened multiple times at multiple intervals. i've replaced: evaporator fan motor, defrost heater, defrost heater thermistor, all thermistors in fridge and freezer and the main control board. This happened to me again this past weekend and so i decided "let's replace some more parts", with 1 of which being the ice dispenser door/flap (it was icing up if i used it in the past). when i took the dispenser display/control assembly off, i noticed on the back of the circuit board that the 1 screw that held it in place actually screwed/dug into the board itself. it looks like it took out 2 or 3 pins with the screw, itself, showing signs of corrosion. so my question to you folks is - could something like this, on this particular circuit board be the root cause of my temperature problems that i never would've guessed??? maybe it's shorting something?? causing bad ground?? i remember seeing on this forum once that someone had a similar problem and replaced the same parts as i did ALONG with his "fresh food defrost assembly" board under the assumption that THAT circuit board was causing problems for him. after all was replaced his fridge was working again but it wasn't determined what part really fixed it. (http://appliantology.org/topic/37379-monogram-ziss420drcs-side-by-side-built-in-frig-ff-at-42-deg/?page=2 ) thank you very much for any information or help you folks can provide! i really appreciate it! -Walt

  7. Hello, greetings, fellow repair enthusiasts. I haven't been here in many years because I've managed to keep the homestead running on very simple tech, with grand old antique appliances which rarely break down, and when they do, I know what to do to fix them. But the neighbor brought me a GE GTS17DTNJRWW top freezer fridge which is less than 1.5 years old and quit cooling soon after it was out of warranty. I typically turn old fridge cabinets into raised planter boxes, but when I began to disassemble this one I was enamored with how clean and new it is, yet simple and basic by design. I noticed that both fans and the interior light operate, but the compressor doesn't seem to audibly turn on, even though there is a slight vibration coming from it. Hard to tell with the fan blowing at it though. I thought I heard the start relay clicking and turning off the compressor after a minute. There was a rattle sound when I handled the compressor start relay combo device so I bought a new start relay and capacitor to play with it. I pressed the door switch 3 times in case the control board needed resetting and it also sat unplugged for a few days. When I turned it on with the new relay/capacitor, I measured 0.4 amps AC going into the start relay. The fridge cools, but only to about 40 degrees inside the freezer compartment, after 20 hours of non-stop operation. I looked at the helpful repair flowchart here on the website, but I don't know how to answer the compressor operating question. It does not make a typical compressor start noise like all the other electric fridges I've ever had. A lot of negative customer reviews on GE's website mention how noisy their compressor sounds, but this one doesn't make a sound. I don't know how to test the control board for faulty function, and due to the cost of the control board I don't want to take a gamble on buying a new one if I don't know if the compressor is any good or not. Can anyone advise me on how to test the compressor for basic operational functionality? How would I know if the compressor is bad versus the control board being faulty?

  21. GE Arctica Profile top freezer. Worked great until late Christmas Day. A couple of casseroles still hot to the touch underneath were put on the top shelf frig by family member. Frig never recovered temperature from shock, even after removing casseroles to the deck freezer (i.e. snow). Consistently reads 58-60 degrees. Discovered freezer consistently read 15 degrees. Still making ice just fine. All food removed from unit. After much reading, here is what I know and don’t know: 1. I don’t hear what I’ll call a blower going on and off like I usually hear. 2. Switched out thermometer with one in separate freezer and temps correlate. 3. Suspect something with defrost system or some fan or damper. I will check those with DH’s help after writing this. 4. Worst case scenario is main control board. Am certain DH won’t want to put that kind of $$ into this 20+ year old refrig. 5. At first we weren’t going to attempt repair, but refrigerator shopping is a nightmare, and I don’t want my frig to wash windows. 1. Top freezer, 2. make ice or not, 3. large capacity because we rarely eat out and we feed friends, family 4. Last more than 8-10 years! Have loved this refrig, any help greatly appreciated! Will post results of checking out defrost, etc. this afternoon. Thank you!
